The Study Program of Doctoral Engineering Science (PSDIT) held its 64th doctoral promotion on Friday, February 16, 2024, at the Postgraduate Hall, Third Floor, Postgraduate Building, Udayana University on Jl. P.B. Sudirman Denpasar. Promovendus I Nengah Simpen, SSi., MSi, with the dissertation titled Development of Green-Silica-Based Superbase-Superacid Hybrid-Nano-Composite Catalysts for Single Step Biodiesel Production from Waste Cooking Oil, received a very satisfactory predicate.

Dr. I Nengah Simpen, SSi., MSi, explains that biodiesel can be produced by converting waste cooking oil through esterification and transesterification reactions with methanol and using catalysts. Solid (heterogeneous) catalysts have superior properties to liquid (homogeneous) catalysts. This study aimed to test the ability of a green hybrid nano-composite superbase–superacid heterogeneous catalyst to simultaneously convert waste cooking oil to biodiesel during esterification and transesterification reactions. This study shows that by simultaneously conducting esterification and transesterification reactions from waste cooking oil on a pilot scale, it is possible to develop a green silica-based hybrid nano-composite catalyst as a bifunctional catalyst for biodiesel production.
