    The Study Program of Doctoral Engineering Sciences (PSDIT) held its 53rd Doctoral promotion on Friday, April 28, 2023, at Wiswakamma Hall, Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University. Promovendus I Nyoman Suta Widnyana, ST., MT with a dissertation entitled Manufacture of Geopolymer Binders Based on Coconut Fiber Ash completed his research for 4 years and 6 months and received a very satisfactory predicate.      

    In his presentation, Dr. I Nyoman Suta Widnyana, ST., MT described that the production of cement requires the process of heating and burning limestone with a very large amount of fossil fuels, causing the release of huge amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Also. it is a major contributor to the formation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It is necessary, therefore, to take mitigation measures to reduce the use of Portland cement in concrete production, such as the development of the production of geopolymer-type binders. Coconut fiber ash waste has been used as a precursor in the production of geopolymer binders. Based on the X-ray diffraction test results, the microstructure of coconut fiber ash waste and the geopolymer binder detected the following compounds: calcium catena silicate (CaO3Si), coesite (SiO2) and albite (AlNaO8Si3). With the increasing age of the test subject, the albite compound in the geopolymer binder experienced an increase in strength, while the strength of the calcium catena silicate and coesite compounds decreased. SEM-EDX test results show an increase in binder density and a decrease in pore strength as the age of the test subject increases.
